Today Chile won against Switzerland in La Copa Mundial (World Cup), and they were pretty excited about it. When we took a break from class to have tea time the game was on, and we didn’t go back to class for over an hour and a half (until the game was over). I’ve said this before, but I’ll repeat it: the Mundial is a BIG DEAL here! Also, Chile’s win last week was the first Mundial victory in about 40 years, according to one of the Chilean students I talked to. This is our second game and our second win, so people went totally nuts!
This video was taken today in Plaza Italia near the metro station Baquedano- Plaza Italia is the place you celebrate when something happens. Coming back to the hotel, the supervisors made us take the metro (see map for details) from where we study at Irarrázaval in the opposite direction as normal, then we took the blue line to Tobalaba, just so we wouldn’t have to switch lines at Baquedano (it’s a bit dangerous with that many fans there). There were literally thousands of people in the streets yelling and honking their horns. Skip to about 2:10 in the video if you can. Our battle cry is at 2:33. ¡Vive Chile!
